Matinee Performance Information

Evening Performance Information

This newsletter contains vital information regarding all aspects of the recitals! Please refer here with any questions you may have about tickets, rehearsals, and the performance.

Recital

The recital will be held at the Wellsboro Area School District Auditorium on Saturday May 17, 2008. There will be a matinee performance beginning at 2:00 pm and an evening performance at 7:00 pm. Students are to arrive at the Auditorium at 1:00 pm for the matinee show and at 6:00 pm for the evening show.

Stage Rehearsal

Stage rehearsals are scheduled for the week of the recital. These rehearsals are also held at the Wellsboro Area School District Auditorium. All stage rehearsals require full costume, including hair & make-up. Attendance is mandatory for these rehearsals as it allows each class to work out spacing, lighting, & costume issues. Each class is allotted a 10 minute rehearsal time on stage to deal with these issues. Students are to arrive at the auditorium at least 30 minutes before their scheduled time.  If one student arrives late then it will affect every student rehearsing after them, therefore, tardiness is not acceptable. Stage rehearsal dates are as follows:

  • Matinee Stage Rehearsal - Tuesday, May 13, 2008

  • Evening Stage Rehearsal - Wednesday, May 14, 2008

Dress Rehearsal

Dress Rehearsal for both the matinee and evening performances are scheduled for Friday, May 16, 2008. All dress rehearsals require full costume. This includes hair and make-up. Students need to stay through the entire dress rehearsal to learn the order of final bows. Intermission will not be properly observed during dress rehearsal.

  • 3:30- Stage Call for Matinee show

    • 3:45-Matinee Full Dress Rehearsal

  • 7:00-Stage Call for Evening Show

    • 7:15-Evening Full Dress Rehearsal

  • 7:00-Approximate Finish time for Matinee

    • 10:00-Approximate Finish time for Evening

Dressing Rooms

·         Each student will be assigned to a dressing room. All dressing rooms are to be left in the same condition which they were found, CLEAN!

·         No food is permitted in the dressing room, so make sure your dancer eats prior to the performance.

·         Dancers are not to leave the backstage area during the show or intermission. Students are to remain in the dressing rooms until it is their time to perform. Adult volunteers will be assigned to the dressing rooms to assist dancers.

·         Dancers do not have time to search for missing shoes/hair accessories, etc. when preparing to enter the stage. Please keep everything together in your own bag.

·         First Position Dance Studio is not responsible for lost items. Dancers using the dressing rooms are responsible to maintain their own property and keep personal belongings together. Everything should be labeled, including your shoes.

Costumes, Hair, & Make-Up

Costumes will be handed out to each dancer when the costume arrives. Each student will have the opportunity to try on their costume to insure a proper fit. Please hang costumes up in a safe place where small dancers will not be tempted to dress up in them. Costumes and shoes are to be brought to rehearsal and recitals, not worn. Please allow time to change into them when you get there.

ABSOLUTELY NO EATING, DRINKING, OR CHEWING GUM IS ALLOWED IN COSTUME.  NO JEWELRY MAY BE WORN.  NO NAIL POLISH ON FINGERS OR TOES.  NO UNDERWEAR FOR ANY CLASSES WEARING TIGHTS.  STUDENTS MAY NOT GO INTO THE LOBBY OR AUDIENCE AREA IN COSTUME AT ANY POINT DURING PRE-PERFORMANCE AND PERFORMANCE TIME.

  • All dancers should have shoes that are fairly clean, taps secure, laces strong, and in good condition.  (NO HOLES IN BALLET SLIPPERS/JAZZ SHOES!)

  • Tumbling classes will go barefoot and bare-legged - no tights or shoes are needed for these classes.

  • All Modern classes will be barefoot.

  • All Ballet classes will need pink tights and pink ballet slippers.

  • All Hip Hop classes will need black hip hop shoes.

  • All Jazz classes will need tan tights and black jazz shoes.

All Pre-Ballet, Pre-Tumbling, & Levels I-II should wear pink blush, brown eye shadow, and rose lipstick.  I presume that moms will be helping little ones with their make-up, please be generous in your application.  This is not make-up for dress up or to look "cute", this is for the stage.  If your child does not have enough make-up on she will look washed out onstage.  A good rule of thumb is if she looks pretty, she needs more!

All Levels III-IV-V-Adult need to wear FOUNDATION, rose blush, red lipstick, brown eye shadow, brown brow liner, black eyeliner, mascara, and powder if needed.  The same holds true here, no pretty dancers!  Please put on enough make-up the first time so I'm not telling you that you need more.  Ballet V, Jazz V, Adult Jazz and Tap V should also wear false eyelashes.

TATTOOS:  Although many older students and adults may have tattoos, they should not be seen onstage.  Although we are a studio, we would like students to strive for a professional image onstage, therefore all students who have tattoos that will be visible even in costume are asked to please take the time to cover them with professional state make-up and/or latex if needed.

ALL HAIR SHOULD BE IN A BUN FOR ALL DANCE CLASSES-TAP, JAZZ, BALLET, AND MODERN.  TUMBLING CLASSES SHOULD HAVE ALL HAIR FRENCH-BRAIDED, UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED BY THEIR INSTRUCTOR.  Students with hair that is too short to put in a bun should pull it back from the face with a NEUTRAL headband.  The audience wants to see your face - NO BANGS!  In order that all hair is uniform, please part hair on the left side; pull hair into a ponytail in the middle of the back of the head; wrap hair around and secure with bobby-pins AND a hairnet.  Be prepared to use hair gel and hairspray to secure any wisps of hair that are not secure.

Parents

Recital is a stressful time for everyone, especially parents! Please take the time to highlight anything that pertains to your dancer(s). The sooner you gather together what your dancer(s) needs for recital, the smoother the recital will go for you. Be sure to order tights (order an extra pair too!) and shoes if necessary as soon as possible. Find a bag to put everything in until rehearsal time. Be sure to mark important dates on your calendar. If you are a working parent, and the rehearsal dates conflict with your schedule, PLEASE check with parents in your child’s dance class to see if they can help you out! Don’t be afraid to ask for help from other dance parents- they may need your help too! For instance, you may be able to put hair up or make up on, and they may not have that talent!

For safety reasons we CANNOT allow flash photography.  Advanced students may lose their spot while turning and fall, while younger dancers get easily distracted and sometimes upset by the random flashes.  Additionally, the person sitting next to you probably wouldn't enjoy the sudden flash and we have also noted in our videotapes that flashing \causes problems with the quality of the tapes.  PLEASE TAKE ALL PHOTOS DURING DRESS REHEARSALS ONLY!  Video-taping by parents is allowed at the dress rehearsal only as well - this is due to copyright laws and the fact that it is not permitted (by law) to videotape a public performance of any kind unless you have obtained copyright permission or have paid the copyright fees.

On behalf of our entire staff we would like to thank you for your time and energy in preparing for our recitals.  We appreciate the opportunity you have given us in instructing your children.  If you have any questions with any aspects of the recital newsletter, please call the studio and leave a message at 570.724.5838, or email at firstpositiondancestudio@hotmail.com.
